Prof. John Cawley Named New Director of Cornell in Washington

Prof. John Cawley, policy analysis and management, is now the next director of the Cornell in Washington program. As he takes the reins of the 41-year-old program, he hopes to take it a step further, improving outreach and working toward increased participation.
Cawley is an economist whose research focuses on health economics and policy. He has conducted studies observing the effects of taxes on sugar-sweetened drinks, calorie labels on restaurant menus, the state expansion of Medicaid and physical education requirements in schools.
This research has allowed Cawley to collaborate with government agencies and co-author papers with researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health. He has also served on committees such as the Institute of Medicine and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. ....

Engaged learning spotlight: beyond incarceration

Positive Psychology and the Prison System
In 2017, developmental psychologist Anthony Ong gave a guest lecture on positive psychology, the study of what makes life worth living. Unlike most such talks the professor of Human Development gives, however, this one required a series of background checks.
Ong had been invited to Auburn Correctional Facility, the maximum-security state prison for men an hour north of Ithaca. On the appointed day, Ong, who also directs Cornell’s Human Health Labs, was escorted through multiple security checkpoints to the venue and, having been forbidden to bring notes of any kind, he gave an extemporaneous talk on how mindset affects human health and longevity. “I was standing in the middle of a chapel, on prison grounds, on a stage behind a pulpit,” Ong recalls. “I give the talk and there’s a half-dozen guys asking questions hard questions, like  ....

Grant Maker Bolsters Human Connection as a Way to Take on Polarization

Grant Maker Bolsters Human Connection as a Way to Take on Polarization
Lily-Anne Trainor
One of Einhorn’s early relationship building grants was a $50 million award to establish Engaged Cornell, an effort that brings undergraduates together for community service.
More than a year of lockdown has taught many Americans about the importance of social distancing and the effects of vaccines. But perhaps the biggest lessons are about people we’ve held close and those whose company we miss, says Jenn Hoos Rothberg, executive director of the Einhorn Collaborative.
The need for human connection drives a new strategy that the philanthropy, founded by hedge-fund manager David Einhorn, introduced late last year. In collaboration with other foundations, it is creating a $100 million fund to support nonprofits that help people who are dug in on opposite sides of an issue see the humanity in their counterparts. ....
