A warrior for the needy and disadvantaged and a relentless woman who fought for people who couldn t fight for themselves.
That s how Tauranga activist and community volunteer Colleen Spiro is being remembered after her death on Sunday, aged 67.
She had long-term health battles but her passing came as a shock to some who loved her.
Spiro was known for her many efforts to help Tauranga s homeless as well as for being outspoken on various council issues, speaking up for Māori and protesting against racism. ....

Hailed as one of the greatest, most inspiring and eloquent poets of South Asia, yesterday (Feb 13th) marked the 110th birth anniversary of the iconic revolutionary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
Glowing tributes were paid to his literary work by scholars and the media on the day.
Faiz was a Pakistani leftist poet and author. Not only was he one of the most celebrated writers of the Urdu language, but among his numerous accolades, Faiz was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature and won the Lenin Peace Prize. ....

Bill wondered about getting out of bed to mow the lawns but thought no, bugger it, they could wait. He was comfortable. He d woken up at 7 and read for a while, then went back
to sleep. In the afternoon, he watched The Scarlet Pimpernel, a 1982 adventure movie set in the French Revolution. It was all right even though it went on for three hours with commercials. Bill, who rented his bach from a dairy company, lay in bed all day. He worked hard with timber during the week and it was a Saturday. Besides, he liked things quiet. It suited his personality. He was a softly spoken man, 41 years old, and kept out of people s way. ....
