OTTAWA Canada’s digital spy agency responded to more than 2,000 attacks on the federal government and its critical infrastructure partners last year, according to a new report, amid heightened concerns over the use of cyber warfare tactics by foreign actors.
In its annual report, the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) said it provided assistance to the Government of Canada or its critical infrastructure partners 2,206 times, including 84 incidents “affecting Canada’s health sector.” It is the latest in a number of recent reports detailing the higher frequency of cyberattacks being directed toward Canada, including a recent report by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) that found “espionage and foreign interference activity at levels not seen since the Cold War,” mostly carried out by Chinese and Russian-backed actors. ....

Blair Grilled Over Quarantine Hotel Safeguards After Reports of Alleged Sexual Assaults
Public Safety Minister Bill Blair claimed he has no say regarding the operation of quarantine hotels at a parliamentary committee hearing on March 10, during which he was grilled by Conservative MP Shannon Stubbs over safeguards for guests at federally approved quarantine hotels.
“The operation of the designated quarantine facilities is entirely under the authority of the Public Health Agency of Canada. I actually have no jurisdiction over those matters,” Blair testified before the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security.
Blair was replying to a question from Stubbs as to whether risk assessments on the safety and security standards at quarantine hotels were done to protect the Canadians made to stay there to comply with federal travel restrictions. ....

Firearms Group Maintains Nothing Said Advocated Violence Against Anyone
A parliamentary committee has censured a firearms group over “dangerous” comments made by its president, an accusation he rejects, about the federal government’s recent gun control legislation.
The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security voted on Feb. 22 to condemn comments made by Sheldon Clare, president of the National Firearms Association (NFA), on Bill C-21, the new firearm legislation tabled by the Liberal government on Feb. 16, during a video podcast hosted by the NFA last week.
The motion, initiated by Liberal MP Pam Damoff, was endorsed by all parties except the Conservatives, whose committee members abstained from voting. ....
