NEW DELHI: A group of citizens including former Judges, retired bureaucrats, ambassadors and senior armed forces officers on Monday wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind seeking an SC monitored SIT under a retired supreme court judge into the recent post poll violence in West Bengal in which several people were killed and many displaced.
“We request that an SIT monitored by a retired Supreme Court Judge appointed by the Supreme Court of India should be formed for a fair investigation and speedy justice. Further, since West Bengal is a sensitive border state, we request that these cases should be handed over to the NIA to deal with the anti-national onslaught on the culture and integrity of the country,” the group has written to the president. ....

GUWAHATI: Assam’s imprisoned peasants’ leader Akhil Gogoi, who created history when he became the first candidate in the state to win assembly election while in judicial custody, was the centre of attention as he, along with 124 other members, was sworn-in as a member of the newly elected 15th Assam legislative assembly on Friday.
Gogoi, who won from Sivasagar assembly constituency without even campaigning by defeating the BJP candidate, was out on a one-day bail to facilitate his swearing-in as an MLA. Soon after the day’s proceedings in the house, he was escorted under heavy security back to judicial custody in a cabin at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital where he is being housed on health grounds. ....

Chennai blast terror suspect arrested | India News

CHENNAI: The city police on Friday arrested a terror suspect involved in the 2014 bomb blast at MGR Chennai Central railway station that killed a woman software engineer.
A team from the Periamet police station led by an inspector zeroed in on the suspect, identified as Rafique, 38, in connection with a recent robbery case. Subsequent inquiries revealed that Rafique is still an active member in Al-Umma, a banned Muslim outfit and that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) was searching for him in connection with the 2014 bomb blast case.
The Chennai police informed NIA officials. A team from the fundamentalist unit of the special branch CID was questioning Rafique at a secluded place. ....
