Olympic Dreams: Jake Riley of Bellingham prepares for biggest marathon of his life


The Sehome High graduate will run during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In 2007, Jake Riley of Sehome High won the State 2A cross-country championship. Years later, he’s getting ready for the Olympics.
At the Olympic trials in Atlanta, the best in the nation came together for a marathon. Only the top 3 made the Olympic team.  
Two-time Olympic Medalist Galen Rupp from Portland won the race.  
Jacob Riley of Bellingham came in second with a personal best of 2 hours 10 minutes, qualifying him for the Olympics.  
“It feels fantastic, he said. It s something I played in my head and just pictured myself being able to do for, I don t know, since running really became a serious passion, and it s been almost 20 years. So, yes, it s just incredibly exciting and humbling and it feels awesome,” Riley sai ....

Feb. 5 Two more Whatcom County residents who tested positive for COVID-19 have died and the number of confirmed cases in the county climbed by 74, the Washington State Department of Health s dashboard reported on Thursday, Feb. 4.
Overall, Whatcom County has seen 5,809 confirmed cases and 68 related deaths during the pandemic, according to state data as of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, meaning 1.2% of all COVID cases in Whatcom County have been linked to a death.
Forty-seven additional probable cases an increase of three from Wednesday s report have been reported in Whatcom County during the pandemic, resulting from positive antigen tests not confirmed by a molecular test. ....

Feb. 4 Another Whatcom County resident who tested positive for COVID-19 has died and the number of confirmed cases in the county climbed by 105, the Washington State Department of Health s dashboard reported on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
Overall, Whatcom County has seen 5,735 confirmed cases and 66 related deaths during the pandemic, according to state data as of 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, meaning 1.1% of all COVID cases in Whatcom County have been linked to a death.
Forty-four additional probable cases an increase of 10 from Tuesday s report have been reported in Whatcom County during the pandemic, resulting from positive antigen tests not confirmed by a molecular test. ....

Jan. 26 Whatcom County saw 45 new confirmed COVID-19 cases reported over two days by the Washington State Department of Health s dashboard on Monday, Jan. 25, but no new deaths were reported..
Overall, Whatcom County has seen 5,231 confirmed cases and 59 related deaths during the pandemic, according to state data as of 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, meaning 1.1% of all COVID cases in Whatcom County have been linked to a death.
Fifteen additional probable cases a decrease of two from Saturday s report have been reported in Whatcom County during the pandemic, resulting from positive antigen tests not confirmed by a molecular test. ....

Jan. 15 For the sixth time in 12 days, Whatcom County s reported number of confirmed new COVID-19 cases was in triple figures, as 128 new cases were reported on the Washington State Department of Health dashboard Thursday, Jan. 14.
Before Jan. 3, Whatcom had not seen a reported increase of more than 84 throughout the entire pandemic.
It took Whatcom County only 14 days to top 1,000 reported cases in 2021 there have been 1,111 so far this year but it s seven-day average did drop slightly from 98.6 Wednesday, Jan. 13, to 92.4 Thursday. The 1,111 cases in 2021 represents 21.0% of the county s total for the pandemic. ....
