NEWPORT, RI After a decade spent at the helm, Rhode Island s Department of Environmental Management director will step down later this month. Director Janet Coit has led the department since 2011.
Terrence Gray, the deputy director for environmental protection, will serve as acting director after Coit s last day on June 18.
Since taking the lead at DEM in 2011, Janet Coit has been a powerful advocate for our state s environment, agriculture, parks, fisheries, and so much more, Gov. Dan McKee. Her commitment to protecting our environment and addressing climate change will benefit Rhode Islanders for years to come. ....

McKee signs Act on Climate


RHODE ISLAND — Over the weekend, Gov. Dan McKee signed legislation that will drastically cut the Ocean State’s climate emissions over the next two decades. 
Under the 2021 Act on Climate, the state will develop a plan to incrementally reduce climate emissions to net-zero by 2050. The plan will be updated every five years and will also address areas such as environmental injustices, public health inequities and a fair employment transition as fossil-fuel jobs are replaced by green energy jobs. 
“With four hundred miles of coastline, urban and rural coastal communities, fishing and agricultural industries, the Ocean State is on the frontlines of the climate crisis,” McKee said. “The Act on Climate represents a commitment that not only addresses a moral imperative, but also presents a platform to enhance our economy, public health, environmental equity and natural environment. RI Gov. Dan McKee signs 'landmark' climate bill


NEWPORT More than 100 people packed the western end of Bowen’s Wharf Saturday afternoon as Gov. Dan McKee signed what speakers called the “landmark” Act on Climate aimed at cutting the state’s greenhouse-gas emissions to net-zero by 2050.
“This is a milestone in the fight against climate change,” said McKee, who was accompanied by multiple state leaders. “Rhode Island is already feeling its impacts across our economy and our environment. With 400 miles of coastline, the Ocean State is on the front lines of this climate crisis.”
“This legislation presents an opportunity to enhance our economy, our public health, environmental equity, and our natural environment,” he said. “The Act on Climate is a bold response to a serious threat.” ....
