RI General Assembly passes 2021 Act on Climate

With final votes in both chambers today, the General Assembly has approved legislation to update Rhode Island’s climate-emission reduction goals and to make them enforceable. The bill now heads to Gov. Daniel McKee.
The 2021 Act on Climate will make the state’s climate goals outlined in the Resilient Rhode Island Act of 2014 more ambitious and updated with current science. Under the bill, the state would develop a plan to reduce all climate emissions from transportation, buildings and heating, and electricity used economywide in the state to 10 percent below 1990 levels this year, 45 percent below 1990 levels by 2030, 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2040 and net-zero by 2050. ....

Climate-change activists face the State House on Tuesday afternoon, urging Rhode Island lawmakers to pass the Act on Climate to put hard limits on greenhouse-gas emissions.
The Rhode Island House and Senate are poised to finalize mandatory greenhouse gas emission limits over concerns from Gov. Dan McKee that the sweeping Act on Climate legislation could expose the state to a flurry of lawsuits.
Both chambers have passed identical versions of the legislation, which would set a goal for net-zero emissions by 2050, but need to vote again to send it to McKee s desk. ....

PROVIDENCE, RI Rhode Island is one step closer to taking bold action to reduce carbon emissions. On Tuesday, the Senate approved a bill that would update the state s climate-emission reduction goals, as well as make them enforceable.
The bill is sponsored by Sen. Sawn Euer, who chairs the Senate s Environment and Agriculture committee. It builds upon the current climate goals outlined in the Resilient Rhode Island Act of 2014, making them more ambitious to align with current scientific evidence. Euer s bill calls for a plan to reduce all climate emissions from transportation, heating, electricty and buildings across the state s economy to the following benchmarks: ....
