Third runway a step closer as Heathrow starts buying houses
The airport has also reopened its property hardship scheme which it uses to buy homes from owners who are otherwise unable to sell

Heathrow has resumed buying houses close to its proposed third runway as it comes under pressure from its biggest investor to press on with the controversial expansion.
The airport reopened a property hardship scheme this month through which it buys homes from owners who are otherwise unable to sell them due to the prospect of a third runway.
Spanish infrastructure giant Ferrovial, Heathrow’s biggest shareholder, has previously hinted that it could sell its stake if it cannot increase its returns. A third runway is viewed as a crucial part of restoring Heathrow’s financial performance in the longer term. ....

Supreme Court gives Heathrow third runway the green light : CityAM

Supreme Court gives Heathrow third runway the green light
The Supreme Court has this morning ruled that Heathrow’s controversial third runway expansion plans can go ahead.
The verdict means that the UK’s highest court has overturned the Court of Appeal’s February decision to block the £14bn project on environmental grounds.
However, in a year in which air travel has plummeted to historic lows due to the coronavirus pandemic, the need for a third runway at Heathrow has come under serious scrutiny.
The ruling hinged on whether Chris Grayling, transport secretary at the time the expansion project was approved, had taken into account the Paris Climate accords when giving the third runway the go ahead. ....

Environmentalists to continue fight against Heathrow expansion following Supreme Court ruling

CAMPAIGNERS have vowed to continue fighting against plans for a third runway at Heathrow airport after a Supreme Court ruling lifted the ban on the controversial project today.
The runway was previously blocked by a court of appeal ruling, which found that the government had failed to take account of its own climate commitments when it approved the scheme.
But the Supreme Court found that this was not necessary as the decision was reached at a time when the previous climate targets were less stringent.
The ruling means that Heathrow’s owners can seek planning permission.
Environmental and local campaigners have described the ruling as “disappointing,” but argue that the runway plans are “far from certain.” ....

Heathrow third runway will go ahead

Heathrow Airport today won a Supreme Court challenge over the Government s decision to give the go-ahead for a third runway.
A panel of five justices at the UK s highest court allowed Heathrow to expand by building the controversial third runway after the Court of Appeal declared the plans were unlawful.
In February three judges concluded that the expansion failed to take into account the Government s commitments on climate change enshrined in the Paris Agreement.
Heathrow Airport Ltd, which owns and operates the west London airport, challenged that ruling at a two-day hearing before a panel of five justices in October. ....
