Portland has been home most of my life. Our family moved here when I was 10. At 18, I joined the Burnside Community Council board, kicking off a life in social services and ministry that has covered three decades and six Portland mayors.
All these years, I ve been in a lover s quarrel with Portland, demanding more housing and attention to civil rights to make Portland a better home for all.
At 52, like many Portlanders, I m dismayed where we are as a city and wondering if Portland, with all the Rose City has to offer, will become the new Eden, or are we on a path to becoming the new Gotham. You might be surprised to learn I m still hopeful about our future. ....

DA association takes umbrage with three bills the group says would weaken sentencing for serious crimes.
Top prosecutors across Oregon took aim at four state legislative proposals in a new report suggesting the bills effect on criminal sentencing would be dramatic and dangerous if passed.
The Oregon District Attorneys Association argues that Measure 11, the voter-approved law generally requiring mandatory minimum sentences and no time off for good behavior for a number of serious offenses, has strong public support and addresses conduct, not color.
I support responsible reforms, said Washington County DA Kevin Barton. However, repealing Measure 11 will not bring more justice to victims, make Oregonians safer or sentencing more equitable. ....

A record number of 12 this session offer 40 bills to write a new chapter in history.
Lawmakers from Oregon s racial and ethnic minorities have laid out their agenda for a session that reflects their record numbers in the state Legislature.
The agenda announced by the Black, Indigenous, People of Color Caucus consists of 40 bills covering policing and criminal justice, economic opportunity, education, health care, human services and housing, tax issues and the political process.
The 2021 Legislature has 12 members of color nine in the House and three in the Senate out of a total of 90. The nationwide protests after the May 25 death of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer have called attention to racial justice issues, including Oregon s history of discrimination against people of color. ....

New state lawmakers Reps. Khanh Pham, Wlnsvey Campos and Ricki Ruiz, are sworn in for their first session as elected legislators.
A trio of new lawmakers state Reps. Khanh Pham, Wlnsvey Campos and Ricki Ruiz were sworn in Monday, Jan. 11, and begin the long slog of the 2021 session next week. Pham and Ruiz represent portions of Multnomah County; Campos a portion of Washington County. All are young. Pham is Vietnamese American, while Campos self-identifies as Latina and Ruiz as Latinx.
They are a more diverse representation for a metro area that, itself, is growing more diverse.
And they have plans to make an impact on the state of Oregon. ....
