Pamplin Media Group - Oregon legislators say summertime activities critical for kids

Oregon legislators say summertime activities critical for kids
March 16 2021
Governor joins push for funding to pay for summer school and recreational programs. Some say plan is hasty.
Oregon kids desperately need a chance to socialize and catch up on academic enrichment. That was the resounding message from Oregon legislative leaders who urged colleagues to approve a $250 million summer learning and childcare package as part of House Bill 5042, a budget reconciliation bill.
During a hearing of the Joint Ways & Means Subcommittee on Education Monday, March 15, Gov. Kate Brown, Senate President Peter Courtney and House Speaker Tina Kotek said Oregon's kids need help returning to healthy, socially and emotionally enriching activities they've been missing out on due to the pandemic.

Pamplin Media Group - OPINION: It's time to give voice to the values that unite us

March 05 2021
Oregon Values & Voices project will pair unbiased research with independent reporting to inform Oregonians working to build stronger communities across the entire state.
As a recently retired opinion researcher, I spent a professional career exploring the divides in Oregon.
The political divide.
The urban-rural divide.
Too often, my exploration was limited to one or another subgroup of Oregonians, rather than all Oregonians. And my charge was to simply report the numbers and let my clients take it from there, which most often meant using the data to promote their self-interest in one way or another.
As a co-founder of the nonprofit Oregon Value and Beliefs Center (OVBC), I now feel like Django Unchained. As a native Oregonian (another divide: short- and long-term residents), I consider it an honor to help provide Oregonians a tool to not only explore the divides in our state but also to help bridge those divides.

Pamplin Media Group - My View: It is time to reconsider Oregon's timber severance tax

February 19 2021
Regan Fisher is a Southeast Portland resident. She argues that state towns and cities should reap the benefits of timber harvests.
Many of Oregon's small towns are cash-strapped and struggling.?
Some blame these financial woes on a decline in revenue from logging due to environmental ?protections, and they advocate for larger harvests. However, the truth is that despite ?conservation efforts, timber harvests on state and federal land have remained about the same ?for the past 25 years. So why aren't communities reaping the benefits??
The answer is that timber companies have finagled outrageously preferential tax treatment for ?themselves, allowing them to wring money from our forests without putting even the bare ?minimum back into the communities in which they operate.

Pamplin Media Group - Infant among COVID-19 deaths reported Thursday

In a statement, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and husband Dan call the death a 'tragedy.'
A Umatilla County infant has died from COVID-19, Oregon health officials reported on Thursday, Feb. 18.
The infant's death was among the six deaths reported by the Oregon Health Authority, bringing the state's death toll to 2,149.
Meanwhile, 466 new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases were also reported, bringing the state total to 151,713.
"We have all worked together for nearly a year in Oregon to protect the lives of those we hold most dear," Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said in a joint statement with her husband, Dan. "The loss of a life so young is an indescribable tragedy for a family. Dan and I send our thoughts and condolences to the mother and family of this child, whose grief must be unimaginable in this moment. The hearts of all Oregonians are with you today."

Pamplin Media Group - Wolves removed from endangered list

Wolves removed from endangered list
Decision would make lethal control possible for stock depredation; a controversial move
In January, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service formally removed most gray wolves in the lower 48 from the Endangered Species List, which turns management over to state fish and wildlife agencies including ODFW.
In Oregon, wolves west of Highways 395-78-95 had remained on the federal ESA when the area east of this boundary was delisted in 2011.
While U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was the lead agency in the western two-thirds of the state, ODFW has always played a significant role in wolf conservation and management statewide since wolves began to re-establish themselves in Oregon in the 2000s.

Pamplin Media Group - Readers letters: State vaccine priorities really stink

Pamplin Media Group
February 10 2021
'This is poor leadership, without a moral center, and sets a bad and unwise precedent for us today as well as for future generations looking back on our time for guidance.'
I am disappointed (to say the least) in Gov. Kate Brown and the Oregon Health Authority in downgrading the priority of seniors to receive the COVID-19 vaccines from the federal recommendations.
And then there is the chaos with the OHA website and the lack of planning that went into the mechanisms for distributing the vaccines in Oregon.
Other states are already vaccinating seniors but Oregon apparently is playing favorite to those pushing for the schools to re-open. That Oregon's seniors are being reduced in status and endangered by the delay seems an awful lot like age discrimination.

Pamplin Media Group - Deaths exceeded births in Oregon because of COVID-19

February 04 2021
Vital statistics are released for 2020 as the Oregon Health Authority reports 730 more cases and seven additional deaths.
Oregon experienced more deaths than births last year for the first time, in part because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"As the pandemic wanes, the number of deaths should fall as well, meaning Oregon's natural increase in the population is not yet turning into a natural decrease on a sustained basis," Josh Lehner of the Oregon Office of Economic Analysis wrote on his blog Wednesday, Feb. 3.
Lehner's comment was in response to the updated monthly vital statistics — births and deaths — released by the Oregon Health Authority through December 2020. In the past 12 months, deaths outnumbered births by just over 200, at least in the preliminary numbers, which will change some when all the records are complete, Lehner wrote.

Pamplin Media Group - Kayse Jama appointed to Oregon Senate District 24 seat

Kayse Jama appointed to Oregon Senate District 24 seat
January 20 2021
Executive director of Unite Oregon appointed to fill spot vacated by Secretary of State Shemia Fagan
Commissioners representing Multnomah and Clackamas counties unanimously cast votes to approve Kayse Jama as the next state senator to represent District 24, covering portions of east Portland and northern Clackamas County.
"The magnitude of this moment is not lost on me," Jama said. "My journey from a nomadic community in Somalia to the Oregon Senate is a testament to where I come from, the people of our district, and our shared values."
Jama — executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Unite Oregon — will join Oregon's legislative assembly ahead of a session that is expected to take aim at advancing issues of racial justice and fixing systemic inequities further exposed and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
