Students rep KGBSD at Alaska State Spelling Bee


Five local students competed in the 2021 Alaska State Spelling Bee late last month.
According to information from the Alaska Spelling Bee organization, 88 students in grades three through eight qualified for the state-level competition.
The bee s first place winner was Ishita Khiani, a seventh-grader at Dzantik i Heeni Middle School in Juneau.
The Ketchikan School District was represented by Thierry Oyedeji, a Houghtaling Elementary fourth-grader; Sarah Reynolds, a Fawn Mountain Elementary fifth-grader; Bella Wills, a Tongass School of Arts and Sciences fifth-grader; Alijhan Millendez, a Ketchikan Charter School fifth-grader; and Riley Saxton, a Point Higgins Elementary sixth-grader.
Those students all won their classroom-level and school-level spelling bees earlier this year, and then competed against each other in the district-wide bee in early March. ....

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Parkwood Elementary School fifth grader has advanced to the 2021 Georgia State Spelling Bee.
Jaylen Jessie finished second out of 15 contestants in the 2021 Region 6 Spelling Bee on February 28. His finish earned him a trophy, a state spelling bee ribbon, pin and $100.
He’s one of 20 students in grades 4 through 8 to qualify for the state spelling bee.
Jaylen advanced to the region competition after winning the 2021 Houston County School District Spelling Bee on January 25.
Another Middle Georgia student, Crawford County Middle School eighth grader AiKevia Rutland, also qualified for state. ....

Mountain Home's Declan Whitlock heads to state spelling bee


Declan Whitlock can spell the word arrondissement. If you re wondering what that word means much less how it s spelled then you are not alone.
Whitlock, a 12-year-old seventh grader at Mountain Home s Pinkston Middle School, will represent Baxter County this Saturday at the Arkansas State Spelling Bee in Little Rock. The Arkansas winner will proceed to The Scripps National Spelling Bee later this year.
 An arrondissement, by the way, is pronounced ah-rown-deez-mon and is an administrative district in large French cities like Paris. That word is one of hundreds memorized by Whitlock during his Spelling Bee preparation.
French words are terrifying, Whitlock said with a laugh. That one gave me so much trouble. ....

Four Morton County and Mandan students have won the right to compete in the State Spelling Bee to be held April 1 at the Radisson Inn, Bismarck. Representing the county are Aaron Meberg, an eighth-grader from Hebron Public School, and Janet Stanton, a seventh-grader from New Salem Public School. Representing the city of Mandan are Lindsay Leingang, sixth-grader at St. Joseph School, and Jason Keller, a fifth-grader; at Christ the King School. The four were chosen from 82 students and 14 schools who competed March 2 in Mandan.
University of Mary sophomore Cindy Leingang set three school records en route to winning the pentathlon at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes indoor track and field national championships held in Lincoln, Nebraska. Leingang, of Mandan, racked up a school record of 3,461 points and also set school records in the 55 hurdles (8.57) and high jump (5-8 ½). Leingang’s win gives her four All-American honors. ....
