Declan Whitlock can spell the word "arrondissement." If you're wondering what that word means — much less how it's spelled — then you are not alone. Whitlock, a 12-year-old seventh grader at Mountain Home's Pinkston Middle School, will represent Baxter County this Saturday at the Arkansas State Spelling Bee in Little Rock. The Arkansas winner will proceed to The Scripps National Spelling Bee later this year. An arrondissement, by the way, is pronounced "ah-rown-deez-mon" and is an administrative district in large French cities like Paris. That word is one of hundreds memorized by Whitlock during his Spelling Bee preparation. "French words are terrifying," Whitlock said with a laugh. "That one gave me so much trouble."
