What To Know About Alabama's New Literacy Act | The Birmingham Times

The Alabama Literacy Act, first passed in 2019, will go fully into effect at the start of the new school year. We’ve been getting questions about the act and what it means for parents and students, especially third-graders who might be at risk of being held back if they aren’t reading well.
The Alabama Education Lab, a team of journalists at AL.com, talked to reading experts and assembled information from the state officials and local schools and districts to help explain the law.
Teachers are required to test the reading level of children in kindergarten, first, second and third grade at the beginning, middle and end of each school year, according to the law. That gives teachers plenty of opportunity to know which children are struggling, said Denise Gibbs, who leads the Alabama Scottish Rite Foundation Learning Centers, which helps children with dyslexia and other reading problems. ....

Financial aid vote key to a more educated, better trained workforce

When the State Board of Education voted last week for a new policy that ensures students complete or opt-out of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), Alabama took an important step toward building a more educated workforce.
FAFSA is the form colleges use to determine a student’s eligibility for federal financial aid, including Pell grants, work-study programs, and loans. Colleges and universities are also increasingly requiring FAFSA completion to receives scholarships from the institution, as well. That includes not only an education at traditional four-year colleges and universities, but also other postsecondary education opportunities such as two-year colleges, certificate programs and associate degrees.  In fact, roughly 36 percent of Federal Pell grants are awarded to help students enroll in certificate and associate degree programs. ....
