Some NC Leaders Say Mississippi's Model Charts The Way To Helping Kids Read

A Huntersville Elementary student works on a reading lesson.
The pandemic created a host of immediate challenges, but the key to long-term economic recovery is teaching North Carolina’s children to read. That’s according to state lawmakers who recently passed a new “science of reading” bill and a group of CEOs who gathered recently to support that strategy.
They re pinning their hopes on what some might consider an unlikely source of inspiration: Mississippi.
Earlier this month, Republicans and Democrats united to pass a bill that mandates a new approach to reading. Soon afterward, a group of North Carolina executives held a virtual news conference to lend their support. They say creating a new generation with strong reading skills is essential to building the work force they need. ....

Student access to high-speed internet is top issue for Public School Forum of North Carolina

Ensuring that students have access to high-speed internet topped the Public School Forum’s list of Top Ten Education Issues for 2021.
Access to broadband became critical for students and school districts last spring when Gov. Roy Cooper ordered schools closed for in-person instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Without high-speed internet, many students were unable to connect to remote learning. Students in the rural parts of the state found connecting to classrooms especially difficult.
According to the public schools advocacy group, 192,000 of the state’s 1.5 million students lived in homes without access to high-speed internet.
It also reported that more than 30 percent of state households cannot afford broadband, lack needed infrastructure or the digital literacy skills to effectively access and use high speed internet. ....

Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson says there's no 'systemic racism' in America during clash with Democrats over new social studies standards

Republican appointees to the State Board of Education (SBE) fired a volley of criticism at the state’s new social studies standards Wednesday, charging that the language in the revision is “divisive” and “politically charged.”
Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson led the attack, doubling down on complaints he made earlier this month about the new standards, which the state board could approve next week.
Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson
“I do not like the tone of these standards, what’s written in them,” Robinson said during a special board meeting Wednesday. “I think they’re politically charged. I think they’re divisive, and I think that they, quite frankly, smack of a lot of leftist dogma.” ....
