Maine Senate Confirms New Members to Maine s State Workforce Board
AUGUSTA - The Maine Senate confirmed five nominees to the State Workforce Board (SWB) in a vote held late Thursday afternoon. These five new SWB members, nominated by Governor Mills, are Adria Horn of Pittston, Allyson Coombs of Brunswick, The Honorable John Patrick of Rumford, Meryl Fogg Ryan of Falmouth, and Vaughan Woodruff of Pittsfield.
With yesterdays confirmation vote by the Maine Senate, the State Workforce Board has gained five experienced leaders who will work to address the pressing needs of Maine employers and workers for a skilled workforce in high demand jobs, said MDOL Commissioner Laura Fortman. These five individuals are qualified, and well respected in their fields. I am confident their expertise will be beneficial to the Workforce Development Board as it tackles the important work ahead. ....

The Immigrant Workforce Subcommittee was established by the State Workforce Board in 2020 to identify issues and best practices regarding the recruitment, retention and employment of immigrants in Maine and develop strategies to meet the needs of immigrant workers and Maine employers.
In 2019, Governor Mills released Maine s ten-year strategic economic development plan focused on promoting innovation and attracting talent. The third goal outlined in the plan, attracting 75,000 people to Maine s talent pool, includes a specific action item focused on integrating Maine s immigrant communities into the workforce. The State Workforce Board (SWB) has been charged with developing strategies that will achieve the goals laid out in Maine s ten-year strategic economic development plan. ....

Maine to receive $100K to accelerate COVID-19 workforce recovery

As part of a new national initiative, Maine will receive up to $100,000 in grant funding and other support to accelerate COVID-19 workforce recovery.
Maine was selected as one of the first nine states in the Workforce Innovation Network, a joint initiative of the National Governors Association and Cognizant U.S. Foundation.
The state will receive a grant to improve employment outcomes in response to the economic impacts of COVID-19, connecting job seekers to training, education, job opportunities and essential support services, according to a news release.
“There are good-paying jobs in the trades, in electrical and plumbing work, in construction and manufacturing, in health care and life sciences and in clean energy that are going unfilled,” Gov. Janet Mills said in the release. “Our economic recovery depends on our ability to connect Maine workers to those jobs.” ....
