Bit by bit, Utah college and university campuses are reclaiming normalcy after COVID-19 forced instruction online and many cherished college experiences were either put on hold or altered to meet public health requirements last academic year.
With growing numbers of people vaccinated and new cases of COVID-19 mostly on a downward trajectory, there is growing optimism that students will largely return to in-person learning and cherished traditions will resume with perhaps an even greater appreciation for the college experience.
Early indications are more students are applying to college and there is a backlog of students who want to live on campus, said Dan Reed, the University of Utah’s senior vice president of academic affairs. ....

President Sets Pace for Employee Wellness with Marathon

Weber State University President Brad Mortensen will kick off Employee Health and Wellness Week by completing his 10th Ogden Marathon with support from faculty and staff who will run various portions of the course from Farmington to Ogden. 
The May 10 marathon will begin at WSU’s extension at Farmington Station at 7 a.m. and will continue north with stops at WSU Davis and the West Center, ending in Stewart Stadium on the Ogden Campus. 
“The exhilaration of completing a marathon, despite the physical exhaustion, does amazing things for my physical and mental wellness,” Mortensen said. “This course is designed to emphasize the connections and support of our Weber State campuses and communities. I’m humbled to have so many pacers and volunteers supporting this effort as we encourage participation in WSU’s health and wellness program.” ....

Ibram Xolani Kendi to Discuss Becoming Antiracist

Named in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020 for his work as a historian and leading antiracist scholar, Ibram Xolani Kendi will present to a Weber State University audience via Zoom, Jan. 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. Advanced registration is required at this link. Kendi will share his message that “being an antiracist requires persistent self-awareness, constant self-criticism and regular self-examination.”
Weber State University President Brad Mortensen will conduct a conversation-style interview with Kendi, whose speech is hosted by the Office of the President in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. ....
