Newton schools to receive $43 million in federal stimulus funds
COVINGTON, Ga. — Newton County Schools will receive almost $43 million in federal stimulus money from Georgia’s share of American Rescue Plan funding.
The funding to Newton County totaling $42,980,285 was announced recently by the Georgia Department of Education.
It is among $3.8 billion — $3,824,434,000 — that Georgia public schools will receive in federal stimulus funds, a news release stated.
The State Board of Education on March 25 approved State School Superintendent Richard Woods' recommendation to begin allocating the funds to individual school districts.

State approves lower EOC test percentage
The Georgia Board of Education voted on Dec. 21, and unanimously approved State School Superintendent Richard Woods’ recommendation of a .01percent course grade weight for Georgia Milestones End-of-Course (EOC) exams for the 2020-21 school year.
Prior to the vote the EOC counted for 20 percent of a students’ grade.
The Georgia BOE said they made that decision because of the, “clear need for students and teachers to have the flexibility to focus on learning and remediation – rather than end-of-year, high-stakes tests,” according to a press release.

GEORGIA (WTXL) — On Monday, the State Board of Education voted unanimously to approve State School Superintendent Richard Woods' recommendation of a .01 percent course grade weight for Georgia Milestones End-of-Course exams for the 2020-21 school year.
Given the impact of the pandemic and the clear need for students and teachers to have the flexibility to focus on learning and remediation, rather than end-of-year, high-stakes tests, the Georgia Department of Education applied for a waiver of federal standardized testing requirements for the 2020-21 school year.
