Unclaimed property event set for Lakeside Shopping Center
The Louisiana Department of Treasury is holding an event to help people retrieve unclaimed property on Saturday at Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie.
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., a news release said.
Each year businesses turn over millions of dollars in unclaimed cash, stocks, bonds, securities and insurance proceeds to the State Treasurer’s Office. These funds, known as “unclaimed property,” include payroll checks, old bank accounts, royalties, utility deposits, interest payments, stock certificates and life insurance proceeds.
One in six individuals in Louisiana has unclaimed property, with claims averaging $900, according to the department. One of the main reasons an item becomes unclaimed property is because of an incorrect or old address. ....

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - From a $1,400 vacuum cleaner to a total home fitness gym or even an upright bike, taxpayers have bought a lot for the state of Louisiana over the last five years. According to the state’s inventory list, they can’t find a lot of it. In fact, 9,926 items that taxpayer money paid for are still missing at agencies across Louisiana. State Treasurer John Schroder talks about his office s division of unclaimed property and tells the story of getting a quarter of a million dollars to a New Orleans homeless man.
Schroder told KEEL listeners the story as he promoted the state s unclaimed property and money website, which he says now totals nearly $900 million .
The money (in the fund) comes to the state in different ways, old checking accounts, gift certificates, life insurance policies, stocks or bonds that get lost.
We recently found a (homeless man) in New Orleans who had $258 thousand.that had been in the system for eighteen years, says Schroder, explaining how the his department is proactive in finding folks with large amounts coming, We start from the top with out high ticket items.
