Sustainability is what the consumer wants – Arnold

Arnold said he was very disappointed over the last few months about the tone and the quality of both political and public debate about the climate and biodiversity challenge.
Both Irish and international consumers want sustainability when it comes to food, according to Tom Arnold, chair of the agri-food strategy to 2030.
Arnold told RTÉ’s
Countrywide on Saturday morning that the working group on the strategy had to produce a strategy that met this basic requirement.
“The terms of reference we were given were to come up with a vision for 2030, which had the agri-food sector delivering on sustainability in its three dimensions – economic, environmental and social – and to come up with the policies that would get us there. ....

Investment set to make Plastipack ‘largest producer of bottle-grade recycled PET in Europe’

Plastipak, a company involved in the design, manufacture, and recycling of plastic containers, has announced a major investment in recycling at its manufacturing site in Toledo, Spain. 
The new facility will convert PET flake into food-grade recycled PET (rPET) pellets suitable for direct use in new preforms, bottles, and containers.
The plant is expected to produce 20,000 tonnes of food-grade pellet per year, and will commence production in the summer of 2022. The project will create approximately 14 new jobs and include additional manufacturing and warehouse space.     
Pedro Martins, Plastipak’s executive managing director in Europe, comments: “The investment in a new recycling facility in Spain will support both Plastipak and our customers in fulfilling our commitments to corporate social responsibility. ....

Controlling rushes while protecting water quality


Rushes in this field are under good control and can be easily targeted.
MCPA was the most common pesticide exceedance found in Irish water supplies in 2020. Exceedances rose from 82 in 2019 to 91 in 2020.
It is a commonly used pesticide by farmers, gardeners and amenities for the control of things like rushes, thistles and garden moss.
Good stewardship
Good stewardship is essential to prevent these exceedances in water supplies. For example, if using pesticides, make sure to use the correct rate, adhere to the correct buffer zones and clean the product’s can correctly.
On farms, soft rushes grow in damp and waterlogged soils. This makes control difficult, as spraying on wet soils can result in pollution of waterways. ....
