DOD seeks clean acquisition data for better policy oversight -- FCW

By Lauren C. Williams

The Defense Department needs better data to improve its oversight of acquisition policies to adequately assess investments and risks over time, according to a watchdog official.
Shelby Oakley, the director for contracting and national security acquisition for the Government Accountability Office said the ability to conduct data-driven oversight was the Pentagon s acquisition office s biggest challenge.
The biggest thing that I see right now that is a challenge from [the undersecretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment] office is their ability to, in fact, conduct data-driven oversight, Oakley told the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness at an April 28 hearing. ....

Arthur Kopit obituary

Last modified on Mon 12 Apr 2021 13.35 EDT
It was the fate of Arthur Kopit, who has died aged 83 from progressive dementia, to be labelled in theatrical dictionaries as a serious and inventive playwright who rarely achieved popular acceptance. His biggest success came as the librettist of the Broadway musical Nine (1982) – a classy elaboration of Fellini’s classic movie 8½ – with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston.
But he made his name as a shooting star in the off-Broadway theatre of the early 1960s alongside Edward Albee, Jack Gelber and the Living Theatre, placing his marker with the outrageous, surreal Freudian capriccio Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Bad (directed by Jerome Robbins and starring Hermione Gingold and the newcomer Sam Waterston). ....

Mandatory review of DOD's compliance on CMMC is delayed -- Defense Systems

By Lauren C. Williams
Apr 06, 2021
The Defense Department has asked for more time to deliver an assessment to Congress about whether its components comply with the unified cybersecurity standard for defense contractors known as Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program, FCW has learned.
A provision in the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act requires DOD s CIO and the commander of the Joint Forces Headquarters-Department of Defense Information Network to review each DOD component for cyber hygiene and assess compliance with CMMC.
The report is supposed to identify a component s CMMC level and implementation of the cybersecurity practices and capabilities required in each of the levels of the CMMC framework, according to the legislation. ....
