In a world-first, a court has ruled that artificial intelligence systems can be named as inventors of a patent.
International law firm Allens advised Dr Stephen Thaler on the successful appeal, wherein a court ruled that AI systems can be officially named as inventors.
Dr Thaler is the inventor of the Device for Autonomous Bootstrapping of Unified Sentience (DABUS), an AI system that has envisioned inventions entirely of its own accord.
Used by Professor Ryan Abbott and his team at the University of Surrey, DABUS received the patent for a food container that improves grip and heat transfer in food. ....

Westpac is considering taking on the corporate watchdog after it filed proceedings in the Federal Court alleging the bank’s interest rate traders engaged in insider trading ahead of the monster $16 billion Ausgrid privatisation in October 2016.
The Sydney based lender – which has been battered and bruised after years of rolling scandals – was hit by Wednesday’s civil proceedings just days after chief executive Peter King won the sharemarket over with his plan to streamline the bank.
While Westpac will be keen to avoid another stoush with regulators, the seriousness of the allegations lobbed at it by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission means the bank is mulling whether or not to defend itself by seeking to demonstrate that the bank was acting in the interest of its clients. ....

Regatta season is fast approaching, with two key school events scheduled for later this month. There’s the Head of Schoolgirls Regatta held on March 12-14 on the Barwon River outside Geelong with the Associated Public Schools of Victoria Sport Regatta (mainly boys but which does include girls) on March 20 at Lake Nagambie.
Guess which event is allowing spectators?
Yes, convoys of four-wheel drives full of long-suffering rowing parents from Firbank and Melbourne Girls’ Grammar will head down to Geelong in full knowledge that spectators have been banned from the HOSG Regatta.
