No mercy on prison sentence for former Colorado Springs cop who molested 18 children

A former Colorado Springs police officer convicted in 2012 of sexually abusing 18 boys at a local middle school will not receive a reduced sentence, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Joshua Carrier, 39, will remain incarcerated with a 70-year-to-life sentence in the attacks on students at Horace Mann Middle School, where Carrier was a volunteer wrestling coach and former school resource officer, according to a five-page ruling by 4
th Judicial District Judge David A. Gilbert.
“The court has seriously considered the option of some adjustment that would provide Mr. Carrier an earlier opportunity for treatment and parole but does not feel it would adequately recognize the widespread damage caused by (the) defendant’s actions,” Gilbert wrote. ....

The Colorado Court of Appeals threw out Carrier’s appeal in June 2018, and the state Supreme Court turned down his request for review in September 2019, leaving him a narrowing window to reverse a punishment that could keep him behind bars for life what relatives of his victims call a fitting consequence for his crimes.
Parents who attended the hearing in person recounted how he leveraged his authority as a police officer to get away with the assaults, using goodwill and gifts to further earn victims’ trust. ....

Jury at mistrial in double-killing blamed prosecution for 'wasted time'

A jury forewoman offered a blunt assessment of prosecutors’ more than four-month effort to prove their case against a man accused of murder in the 2017 execution-style shootings of two Colorado Springs teenagers, a judge said Thursday.
“The jury felt that much of their time was wasted by the prosecution,” 4th Judicial District Judge David A. Shakes said at a hearing to schedule a new trial for Marco Garcia-Bravo. The judge said the forewoman requested that he convey that message “at the very beginning” of her comments to him at the trial’s conclusion.
Jury selection for a new trial was scheduled to begin April 7, and the judge set opening statements for April 19. ....

Jury convicts Marco Garcia-Bravo of one count; retrial on murder charges set

A jury Monday convicted Marco Garcia-Bravo of a single count of accessory to murder in the 2017 killings of two Colorado Springs teenagers but failed to reach an accord on whether he was guilty of murder in their execution-style killings.
Fourth Judicial District Judge David A. Shakes ordered Garcia-Bravo, of Colorado Springs, to appear in court Thursday to schedule a new trial on seven unresolved charges, including four counts of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree kidnapping. Garcia-Bravo is accused of serving as one of two triggermen in the March 2017 killings of 16-year-old Natalie Cano-Partida and 15-year-old Derek Greer, both students at Coronado High School. ....
