JONAH RASKIN : BOOKS | 'By the Light of Burning Dreams': Everybody is a star

By Jonah Raskin |
Near the end of his days as a cultural revolutionary, Abbie Hoffman explained, facetiously, that he was to blame for crime in the streets, kids acting out, and drug addiction. He was reacting to the ongoing assaults on the Sixties and the smears on his own personality.
Even before the decade of the 1960s ended, critics of the counterculture and the anti-war movement lambasted radicals, feminists, and left-wing ideologists for creating anarchy and fomenting chaos.
Over the past five decades, the culture wars with defenders of the Sixties on one side and detractors on the other have not abated. Americans are still scapegoating “The Sixties.” ....

There are moments in “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” which opens at the Kendall Square this weekend and comes to Netflix Oct. 16, when the echoes volleying back and forth between the events of 1968-1970 and the protests and political landscape of today don’t seem like echoes at all but statements in unison. A shot of the Chicago police removing their badges before wading into crowds with clubs. The death of a Black man that would more properly be termed an execution. A witness reminding the courtroom and the audience that “the president is not the client of the attorney general.” ....

With six nominations including Best Picture, Netflix’s “The Trial of The Chicago 7″ heads into Oscar weekend riding high, following months of acclaim for the Aaron Sorkin-directed film.
But the drama’s depiction of the infamous political trial, where a ragtag group of anti-Vietnam War activists were tried by President Richard Nixon’s Justice Department, was heavily sanitized and romanticized for Hollywood, said Lee Weiner, one of the last two living members of the notorious seven. ....

Bobby Seale, bound and gagged in a Chicago courtroom, is one of the most searing images in American history. There were no photographs of this shocking episode during the trial of the Chicago 8 in October 1969, only artists’ sketches. This has made the image even more resonant as we conflate the sketches and subsequent actors’ portrayals in our visual memory. The image of Bobby Seale, physically restrained but defiant, refusing to submit to the judge, has haunted the artist Karon Davis for many years. It became especially provocative during the past year’s incidents of police violence. ....
