A Windsor judge took kindly to a human smuggler on Wednesday, sentencing a commercial trucker convicted of ferrying 11 Nigerian nationals across the border in the cab of his tractor trailer to a year’s house arrest.
Superior Court Justice Thomas Carey said it was mere “speculation” by the Crown that Paul Ngoue-Ngameleu’s attempt to smuggle three women and eight children into Canada on Sept. 17, 2017, was a “criminal enterprise” motivated by greed and designed for profit. He also rejected the prosecution’s submission that the foreign nationals, who shared the same ethnicity as the trucker from Montreal, had been “subjected to horrific conditions” in the crowded front of the truck. ....

A DNA test is being arranged to confirm the breed of a dog seized just before Christmas from a Chatham family by Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR).
But there’s a bigger issue at play, said lawyer David Sandor, who is representing dog owner Shawn Hall, as civil legal proceedings began Tuesday in Superior Court in Chatham.
