Road funding and aged care announcements from the federal budget have been welcomed by a Central Queensland mayor, but much of this region’s funding push will come in the lead-up to the upcoming election.
While there haven’t been many significant federal budget announcements for the Banana Shire, Mayor Nev Ferrier thinks there will be benefits to his region with the funding given to surrounding areas.
He welcomed the funding for road upgrades in Central Queensland.
“There’s $400 million on the Bruce Highway, and a lot of that’s going to be spent between Gladstone and Rockhampton, which is great,” Cr Ferrier said. ....

Seven mayors from Central and Western Queensland have launched an infrastructure advocacy campaign on behalf of the beef industry.
The Gladstone, Isaac, Banana, Central Highlands, Woorabinda, Barcaldine and Blackall-Tambo mayors formed the Queensland Beef Corridors group to call on the State and Federal Governments to upgrade roads in their regions that allow agriculture to flourish.
Central Highlands Mayor Kerry Hayes said that the seven local government areas provided a quarter of the country’s cattle, but the associated infrastructure was lacking.
“We already have a strong commitment from the State and Federal governments to improve key freight routes and connectivity between agricultural regions and ports,” he said. ....

Two extra positions have been created to assist with additional opening hours at waste facilities across the Central Highlands.
The Capella community submitted a petition with its preferred operating hours to Central Highlands Regional Council in April, prompting council to review its options.
Manager Planning and Environment Kirstin Byrne said recruiting extra positions was a short-term solution while council’s long-term waste strategy was developed.
“After the introduction of the Queensland Waste Levy on 1 July 2019, council was required to put in place waste disposal controls across all our waste facilities,” she said.
“To assist us in fulfilling our monitoring and reporting obligations under the state levy, 24/7 access was no longer an option so manned opening hours had to be brought in and CCTV cameras installed. ....
