Public Workshop planned on Winnisquam Watershed Plan
May 12, 2021REGION Join the Winnisquam Watershed Network (WWN) for a virtual public workshop on Tuesday, May 18 from 4:30-6 p.m. to discuss the development of the Winnisquam Watershed Based Management Plan and how it will benefit the watershed. The Winnisquam watershed includes land within Laconia, Belmont, Sanbornton, Tilton, Meredith, New Hampton and Gilford as well as Lakes Wicwas, Opechee, and Winnisquam.
Representatives of WWN and the consulting team engaged by the US Environmental Protection Agency will present an overview of the watershed planning process and discuss some of the issues facing the watershed as well as potential solutions. The public and stakeholders will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide input during the workshop. We encourage you to participate, get informed and be a part of shaping the future of our lakes and watershed. ....

Tiny scoops of water are unlocking worlds of information about Oregon watersheds


SALEM — Next to the babbling banks of the Santiam River’s south fork, Brooke Penaluna sought a flat spot to set up shop. She plopped down a black, pipe-like reservoir with four clear cups on top and clicked the power button on a small pump that sounded like the world’s tiniest lawnmower.
“And then we put on our gloves and our waders, and we go out into the stream,” said Penaluna, who works as a research fish biologist for the U.S. Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Research Station.
Near the middle of the river, Penaluna carefully dipped four plastic bottles into the oncoming water, tightly capping them for the journey back to shore. ....

Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust hires Bear River watershed conservation coordinator


A group of conservation organizations and governmental agencies have pooled their resources to help the Pocatello-based Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust hire a full-time Bear River watershed conservation coordinator.
Kiley Heaps, who recently earned two master s degrees in anthropology and geographic information systems from Idaho State University, started with the land trust on March 1 and is training to spearhead the conservation efforts within the Bear River watershed.
Kiley will coordinate acquisitions of conservation easements along the Bear River within Wyoming, Idaho and Utah, in addition to helping land owners access state and federal conservation programs to enhance the conservation values of their properties. ....

Prescribed burns planned
Over the coming months, the U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct six prescribed burns in the Cheoah and Tusquitee Ranger Districts of the Nantahala National Forest in Clay, Cherokee and Graham counties. These low-to-medium-intensity burns aim to create healthier, more resilient forests that are better able to support wildlife while also reducing the risk of wildfire.
Planned burns in Cherokee County:
• Hanging Dog Campground and boat ramp, 1,000 acres. 
Planned Burns in Clay County:
• Fires Creek, 8,100 acres
• Buck Creek, 350 acres
• Meeting House area, 2,100 acres. 
• Shell Stand/Cook Branch area, 1,100 acres
• Cheoah Ranger District Office, 20 acres
The dates and actual units burned will depend on weather conditions. Crews will wait for proper wind and humidity conditions to conduct the burns, and burns will occur only when environmental conditions permit. Some roads or trails may be clos ....
