The Blitz: 80th anniversary of deadly aerial raids on Inverclyde

EIGHTY years have passed since Hitler s bombers brutally battered Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow during the infamous wartime Blitz on our towns.
The air raids which took place over the nights of May 6 and 7 in 1941 claimed the lives of 329 men, women and children, injured 600 other victims, and left huge swathes of the district burning and devastated.
As the years since have rolled on, many of the survivors of what happened, and their memories, are no longer with us.
But it is a moment in the area s history which must never be forgotten.
Inverclyde has most recently like the rest of the world been living through the Covid-19 pandemic and the human tragedies it has inflicted. ....

Scottish Parliamentary Election 2021: Stuart McMillan is re-elected as MSP for Inverclyde

THE SNP S Stuart McMillan has been re-elected as Inverclyde s MSP.
The declaration has just been announced at the Waterfront Leisure Centre in Greenock and Mr McMillan topped the poll with 19,713 votes.
Labour s Francesca Brennan was second with 11,539.
Conservative candidate Caroline Hollins polled 3,313 votes, LibDem Jacci Stoyle took 1,033 and John Burleigh, the independent candidate, picked up 776.
The turnout was 63.59 per cent, up on the 57.7 per cent figure from five years ago.
The total number of votes cast was 36,490. ....

Inverclyde Council leader's 'serious concerns' over theupcoming Scottish Parliament election

Labour s Stephen McCabe feels the poll will be difficult to run it in the current climate.
He pressed senior officials on the issue at a full council meeting as he asked whether the local authority would be able to sufficiently protect voters and staff going to the polls during the pandemic.
He also highlighted his worries around parties not being able to campaign in the usual manner and what effect that could have on the result.
While insisting all necessary preparations were being made, chief executive Aubrey Fawcett - returning officer for the area - admitted he shared Councillor McCabe s concerns. ....
