Japan's new Aegis ships to cost at least 900 billion yen-Asahi

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan s new Aegis missile-defence ships are expected to cost at least 900 billion yen ($8.27 billion), more than double the cost of two planned ground-based sites that the country cancelled last year, the Asahi newspaper reported. Government ministers, who have yet to provide a cost estimate for the Aegis ships, may face questions in parliament about the expense, the newspaper said, without saying where it obtained the information. A source with knowledge of the ship proposal told Reuters in October that Japan may have to spend twice as much and wait up to three years longer to deploy new Aegis ships than if it had stuck with the ground-based plan. With powerful new Lockheed Martin Corp radars, the ships are meant to beef up defences against missile strikes. In June, Taro Kono, defence minister at the time, suspended plans for two land sites with an estimated lifetime cost of $4 billion, citing the possibility that interceptor missile booster rockets could fall on loc ....

Unconfirmed reports of vessel attacked off Saudi Arabia: Dryad

DUBAI (Reuters) -Saudi Arabia said on Tuesday it had intercepted an explosive-laden boat off the Red Sea port of Yanbu after maritime security firms cited unconfirmed reports of an attack on a vessel in the area. A Saudi defence ministry statement on state media did not say whether there had been any damage as a result of the operation by the Saudi navy to intercept and destroy the remote-controlled boat. Security firm Dryad Global had earlier said it received unconfirmed reports that a vessel, possibly the oil tanker NCC Dammam owned by a unit of Saudi firm Bahri, had been attacked off Yanbu. Chief executive Abdullah Aldubaikhi told Reuters that no vessels owned by National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) had been attacked. British maritime security company Ambry also cited reports of an incident and said smoke was seen rising from a vessel. United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it was aware of reports of an incident approximately 2 nautical miles from Yanbu a ....

Oil spills outside China's Qingdao port after ship collision

By Koustav Samanta, Muyu Xu and Jessica Jaganathan BEIJING/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A tanker carrying around one million barrels of bitumen mix was involved in a collision near the Chinese port city of Qingdao during heavy fog, spilling oil into the Yellow Sea, Chinese maritime officials and tanker representatives said on Tuesday. The collision involving the anchored Liberia-flagged tanker A Symphony and the bulk vessel Sea Justice took place at 0850 local time (0050 GMT), A Symphony s manager Goodwood Ship Management said in an e-mail. The force of the impact on the forward port side caused a breach in cargo tanks and ballast tanks, with a quantity of oil lost into the ocean, Goodwood said, adding all of the crew had been accounted for and there were no injuries.
