House approves Zeigler bill to support retirement program for volunteer first responders

AUGUSTA The Maine House of Representatives gave unanimous initial approval Wednesday to a bill that would provide state funding to Maine’s Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP), a program that rewards volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel for their service with contributions to a retirement program.
“I want to share my sincere thanks to all of my colleagues for this bipartisan show of support for our volunteer first responders,” said Representative Stanley Paige Zeigler, D-Montville, the bill’s sponsor. “Funding LOSAP is the right thing to do for the countless volunteers who have dedicated many years to responding to calls.” ....

Committee supports Rep. Zeigler bill to fund retirement program for volunteer first responders

AUGUSTA –The Legislature’s Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee gave unanimous approval Monday to a bill to provide state funding to Maine’s Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP) that rewards firefighters and EMS personnel for service to their communities with contributions to a retirement program.
The vote on LD 1316 came immediately following the bill’s public hearing earlier the same day.
“I want to share my sincere thanks to the committee members for this bipartisan vote in support of our volunteer first responders,” said Rep. Stanley Paige Zeigler, D-Montville, the bill’s sponsor. “We are an aging state, and our pool of volunteer first responders is aging, too. Funding LOSAP is the right thing to do for the countless volunteers who have dedicated many years to responding to calls, but it would also be a strong incentive for younger Mainers to step forward and commit to service.” ....

Keansburg: Ex-police chief got too much vacation time, NJ says

An audit report released Wednesday by the Office of the State Comptroller found the Borough of Keansburg gave what it described as excessive benefits to its employees, including 11 weeks of vacation to the police chief in 2018.
“Keansburg’s police chief was granted vacation leave on the taxpayer’s dime for more than 20% of the work year,” acting State Comptroller Kevin D. Walsh said. “Eleven weeks of vacation is unreasonable and wasteful. Most New Jerseyans are lucky to get a few weeks of vacation each year.
Walsh added, Giving a public employee who is paid $208,000 per year 11 weeks of vacation in addition to paid holidays, sick leave and compensatory time isn’t illegal, but it should be. The Legislature possesses the power to stop this sort of waste and abuse and has used it in the past to protect taxpayers. In the absence of legislative changes, these sorts of outrageous abuses will continue.” ....
