Burying Rocks

This weekend, I set out to turn over a new plot for a family garden. We enjoy planting vegetables, watermelons and even pumpkins for the fall. This plot is not very large, maybe 20 feet by 30 feet. I turned it over by hand and with a tiller. Every few feet, I would run into a small rock (thankfully only small ones!) and I could not help but think of this article from the March 25, 1871, edition of the Cecil Whig:
“There are two sides to most questions, and the question whether we shall bury or lift out the stones from our pastures is no exception to the general rule. Under certain circumstances it is admitted that the rock-lifters are the most economical. With Packer’s Machine, or a Rocklifter, three men and a team will take out in a day say one hundred rocks, weighing from two to six tons. It will take the same force, another day, to pack them away in a wall if it is handy. If you have to carry them a long distance and dump them into a swamp or pond-hole, it will ta ....

Sharon De Valentin harnesses elements in fire and Wax
Local artist, Sharon De Valentin is showing her latest exhibition Fire and Wax at ArtSpace at Griffith Regional Theatre during April and May.
The exhibition explores the relationship between nature and our man made environment. The paintings reflect landscapes, farming and botanicals using the ancient art form of encaustic, which Ms De Valentin uses in both painting and sculpture.
Ms De Valentin said, “The sculptural vessels on display have a unique Australian heritage, as the nuts and seeds used in many of the works have been collected throughout Australia over many years and were gifted to me.” ....

Musical time machine recreates lost performance

Musical time machine recreates lost performance
Virtual reality and ground-breaking acoustic techniques are being used to recreate historical music performances that took place more than half a millennium ago.
The immersive technology, which allows the listener to hear exactly how music would have sounded in the now-ruined chapel at Linlithgow Palace, is the closest people will get to musical time travelling, the researchers say.
Scholars from Edinburgh College of Art and the universities of Birmingham and Melbourne have collaborated with Historic Environment Scotland to reconstruct lost performances at the Palace – once a majestic royal residence of the Stewarts in the 15th and 16th centuries. ....

Researchers harness AI to identify cancer cells by their acidity

2021 03 17 NUS researchers harness AI to identify cancer cells by their acidity 1
The novel technique of using AI to quickly analyse cells for cancer diagnosis was developed by an NUS research team led by Professor Lim Chwee Teck (left). With him are two team members – Dr Jokhun Doorgesh Sharma (centre) and Dr Yuri Belotti (right).
Healthy and cancer cells can look similar under a microscope. One way of differentiating them is by examining the level of acidity, or pH level, inside the cells.
Tapping on this distinguishing characteristic, a research team from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has developed a technique that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to determine whether a single cell is healthy or cancerous by analysing its pH. Each cancer test can be completed in under 35 minutes, and single cells can be classified with an accuracy rate of more than 95 per cent. ....

A leap forward in research on CAR T cell therapy – Cellular engineering makes it possible to target therapy also against solid
A study recently published in the journal Science looked into how CAR T immunotherapy could be used to treat solid tumours in addition to leukaemias. The programming of CAR T cells opens avenues for applying cell therapies to, for example, breast cancer or ovarian cancer in the future.
In cancer immunotherapy, cells in the patient’s own immune system are activated to attack cancer cells. CAR T cell therapy has been one of the most significant recent advances in immunotherapies targeted at cancer. ....
