WAYANAD: Thanks to KP Radhamani, a 64-year-old ‘walking librarian’ based in Mothakkara in Vellamunda, scores of women preparing for competitive tests in the region have been able to get books at Rs 5 per month. She has been distributing books to women and the elderly since 2012. Braving the hilly terrain, she walks around four kilometres daily carrying a basket of books. But these days, she is just that bit careful because of the pandemic, and has cut down her ‘coverage’ by half. ....

ELMHURST — Lauren Blanford had finished reading the children s picture book The Undefeated when a student raised a hand.
Mrs. Blanford, what was that book about?
It s about Black people, another student said.
It s about love, one of their classmates said.
Over the past year, the pandemic has forced Blanford to rethink almost every aspect of her job at Emerson Elementary School in Elmhurst. Among her colleagues, she s known for her ingenuity, for finding ways to bring the world of books to children learning at home. ....

Automated system speeds up New Braunfels library returns


To check-in materials and sort them into a bin is an essential but sometimes tedious library function.
But an automated material handling system used by librarians at the New Braunfels Public Library now takes the hassle out of sorting, makes the process easier and more efficient and helps get returned materials back into circulation as quickly as possible.
According to Digital Services Librarian Miranda Robbins, the system, manufactured by Minnesota-based TechLogic Inc., detects and sorts the materials as they are returned by patrons on a conveyor belt using radio frequency identification technology. 
The machine then places the items into bins by type or subject, such as adult fiction books, children’s fiction books, non-fiction books and DVDs. ....

The High Court of India’s Madhya Pradesh state has restrained police from arresting a Catholic nun accused of attempting to convert a Hindu woman to Christianity.
The bench of the court in Jabalpur city on March 16 also asked the accused, Sister Bhagya of the Sisters of the Destitute congregation, to cooperate with police in the investigation of the case against her. ....

Oh no! Oregon libraries face a conundrum
Attempts at mostly clever rhymes aside, when Dr. Seuss publisher decided to no longer license or sell six particular titles, Oregon s public libraries didn t flinch. They mostly shrugged.
On March 2, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced that six of the children s books would no longer be published or licensed because they include images and text that portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong. ....
