City Council gives OK for westside library branch sponsorship program

New Braunfels City Council members have given the green-light to a sponsorship program that will benefit the now under construction westside branch of the New Braunfels Public Library.
The sponsorship program approved by council members on Monday will allow local businesses and residents the opportunity to give to the library and receive recognition for their support.
“We’re really excited when we contemplate the opening of another public space for this community,” said Library Director Gretchen Pruett. “In a public space like this, the city has used partnerships through sponsoring opportunities such as those at Das Rec to collect revenue and put community naming opportunities throughout the building.”

New Braunfels City Council votes to lift mask rule for city buildings

New Braunfels City Council members on Monday unanimously voted to lift a mandate requiring the public to don face coverings while visiting city facilities.
The new policy went into effect immediately. Per Gov. Abbott’s executive order, members of the public visiting city facilities are “strongly encouraged” to wear a mask or other face covering, but they will no longer be required to do so.
On March 8, council members voted to increase capacity and operate all city facilities at 100% occupancy but continue requiring the public to use face coverings when social distancing was not feasible.
That decision came after Abbott’s executive order rescinding statewide face covering and occupancy requirements went into effect.

Library lengthening loan time on books and more Monday

The New Braunfels Public Library will begin extending the loan periods on some types of library materials starting Monday.
Books, audiobooks and compact discs will move from a three-week initial checkout to a four-week checkout with one renewal.
Additionally, DVDs and Blu-rays will move to a two-week initial checkout with two renewals from the original one-week initial checkout period.
New books and new audiobooks will keep their two-week initial checkout period with two renewals.
Library Director Gretchen Pruett said the changes in loan periods are intended to streamline the amount of time different types of materials can be checked out.

Automated system speeds up New Braunfels library returns

To check-in materials and sort them into a bin is an essential but sometimes tedious library function.
But an automated material handling system used by librarians at the New Braunfels Public Library now takes the hassle out of sorting, makes the process easier and more efficient and helps get returned materials back into circulation as quickly as possible.
According to Digital Services Librarian Miranda Robbins, the system, manufactured by Minnesota-based TechLogic Inc., detects and sorts the materials as they are returned by patrons on a conveyor belt using radio frequency identification technology.
The machine then places the items into bins by type or subject, such as adult fiction books, children’s fiction books, non-fiction books and DVDs.

New Braunfels breaks ground on Westside library

City officials last week broke ground for construction of the $5.5 million New Braunfels Public Library Westside Branch project approved by voters in the 2019 bond election.
The Westside Branch project will expand the library services currently offered at the Westside Community Center, replacing the 600-square-foot room located inside the Westside Community Center with an 8,800-square-foot facility being built on that same property.
Located at 2932 I-35 South along the I-35 frontage road, the new facility will include a program room, study rooms, teen space, a library collection of up to 20,000 items, computers and a community garden.
The Library Foundation will support the $152,764 cost of the community garden.
