China s railway network saw a return-travel peak on Wednesday as the May Day holiday ended, and the daily number of railway passenger trips during the holiday period exceeded pre-COVID-19 levels.
On Wednesday, the last day of the five-day holiday, 17.2 million railway trips were expected to be made, an increase of 30 percent from the same period in 2019, according to China State Railway Group, the national railway operator. ....

A new technique to make biodegradable plastic fully compostable has been discovered by scientists at the University of Berkeley, US.
Biodegradable plastics are supposed to break down into water, carbon dioxide or in contact with other organic materials (fruits and vegetables) in the compost bin.
But in reality, most of them take as long as regular plastic bags to disintegrate, or need to be brought to an industrial composting centre to be recycled under high temperatures - a not so green virtuous circle in the end.
This
new study claims to have developed a new plastic that can degrade by up to 98 per cent in household compost in just a few days, simply by adding heat and water. ....

A research team in Qingdao, East China s Shandong province, has discovered a marine bacterial community capable of efficiently degrading plastic waste.
The study demonstrated the potential for using these bacteria to develop plastic degradation, which could give an answer to a major pollution problem on the planet, according to the research team, led by Sun Chaomin, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Oceanology. ....
