IMF chief says 'confident' to distribute new SDR by mid-August - World

WASHINGTON International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has said that she is confident the IMF will distribute a new allocation of Special Drawing Rights (SDR) to member countries by mid-August.
It is a remarkable demonstration of multilateralism that the IMF membership has agreed to support a new SDR allocation of 650 billion US dollars, the largest in the history of the IMF, Georgieva said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on Tuesday.
In comparison, in the midst of the global financial crisis, the membership allocated 250 billion dollars to help countries deal with the consequences of this crisis, she said. ....

The Covid-19 pandemic has aggravated the problem of unemployment in the country. Many people who used to live a financially stable life are now in desperate need of financial aid. The government isn’t paying attention to the problems being faced by these people. The salaried class, too, is quite affected by the pandemic. For one year now, the salaries have remained the same. Even government employees were deprived of the annual 10 percent increment. The prices of daily items have been increasing at an unprecedented pace, making it difficult for people to meet their monthly expenses.
People who have school- and university-going students have been compelled to take their children out of school. It is disappointing to see that almost every class has been facing many financial challenges. The government needs to take some serious steps to help people deal with the current crisis. It should create job opportunities for people and support ....

Baltic foreign ministers visiting Ukraine 'to express support'

VILNIUS (Reuters) - The foreign ministers of EU members Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania arrived in Ukraine on Thursday morning to show solidarity with the country in the face of a Russian military buildup, an Estonian ministry spokeswoman said.
“The mission of the joint visit is to express strong support to Ukraine and reconfirm support for its territorial integrity and sovereignty,” spokeswoman Aari Lemmik told Reuters.
“In recent weeks we have seen an unfortunate spike of violence and intensity of the armed confrontation in Donbass, and we are really worried about the buildup of Russian troops that have been deployed along the border of Ukraine and the occupied territories”, she said. ....
