Sometimes he told dispatchers he needed to talk about his mental health, other times his words didn’t make much sense. He said he didn’t need police officers to check on him, but he kept calling back anyway. Calls like these to local police departments are increasingly common in Maine and across the country, prompting public safety officials to re-examine how they’re interacting with people with mental illness and to hire mental health clinicians better equipped to work with people in crisis. ....

Such a request was not unusual in the run-up to budget season – Plainfield officials heard a similar in-person funding request in March – but the letter this year included a stark paragraph spelling out how the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic had affected the social service agency, which supports towns throughout Windham County. “Our Crisis Response Services team is currently averaging a more than 230% increase in services over last year,” Manning wrote. “We are also seeing increases in our outpatient mental health services for adults, children and families, addiction treatment programs and our domestic violence program.” ....
