A DUNDEE startup hopes to expand into the US after strong growth in its second year of trading. Broker Insights, an insurance technology company founded in 2018 by two former Aviva executives, said its revenues had doubled to £2.25 million in the year to 31 January 2021. The company, which is backed by Scottish games entrepreneurs Chris van der Kuyl and Paddy Burns, said its platform had also doubled gross written premiums, the insurance industry yardstick, to £1 billion. Founders Fraser Edmond and Iain Crole describe Broker Insights as the first commercial insurance platform that uses market data and analytics to connect major insurers with business opportunities held by regional brokers. ....

The additional funding will be awarded in the next four rounds of Scottish EDGE, which supports innovative companies with up to £150,000 cash in a combination of grants and loans. It comes after a report published by Oxford Economics, commissioned by The Hunter Foundation, suggested radical and ambitious policy changes are required for Scotland’s economic performance to be significantly boosted within the next 15 years. ....

The new money is a mix of grants and loans led by a £500,000 commitment from Sir Tom Hunter. The Ayrshire entrepreneur’s Hunter Foundation has backed the Scottish EDGE initiative since its inception in 2015, when it was established to support early-stage businesses with high growth potential. Scottish EDGE runs two competitive rounds per year with each typically producing 12 winners who receive an average of £60,000 in grant and loan money. The programme is currently in its 17th funding round, with the winners to be named on May 11. ....
