Nigerians fault proposed bill criminalizing ransom payment

Nigerians on social media and off social media are reacting to the bill criminalising payment of ransom to kidnappers.
On Wednesday, the Senate passed a bill for a second reading to slam 15 years’ imprisonment on anyone caught paying ransom.
This bill comes amidst rising insecurity and thriving kidnapping across the country. Travelling on some highways across the country have become dangerous in recent times. One of the most notorious highways are the Abuja Kaduna highway, Abuja-Lokoja express and several others.
In the Southwest, kidnapping for ransom prompted governors of the region to form the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun. Just recently, southern governors banned open grazing and made other eleven security resolutions. ....

A former Director of the State Security Service, Mike Ejiofor has warned that Nigeria is heading towards a state of anarchy as regions and states have resorted to floating of security networks to defend their respective lands and people.

The paramount ruler of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi is set to invite herders, farmers and other stakeholders in the town for a peace summit.

Oluwo of Iwo disclosed this in a statement by his media aide, Alli Ibraheem, which was made available to SaharaReporters on Wednesday.
In the statement titled, ‘Herders-Farmers Summit: Oluwo Converges Stakeholders On Lasting Solution,’ the monarch revealed that the goal of the gathering is to find a lasting solution to the incessant clashes between herders and farmers. ....

On the contingent of youths arrested by Amotekun in Ondo

LAST week, tension reportedly gripped residents of Okitipupa in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State following the arrest of youths from the northern part of the country by men of the Ondo State command of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun. The youths loaded in a truck were reportedly intercepted in front of the Okitipupa Army Barracks at about 10p.m. on Thursday last week and taken to Akure, the state capital. Residents of the town were said to have gathered at the scene, expressing apprehension that the youths were in the town to cause havoc. Accosted by the operatives, some of the youths reportedly jumped down from the vehicle and ran into the town, but about 45 of them were arrested. When interrogated, the youths said they were sent from the North to undergo military training in the barracks. Confirming the incident, the state Commander of the corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, said investigations had commenced into the incident. ....

Escalating Insecurity: A National Malaise

The nation’s insecurity is worsening, the challenges are humongous, and the solutions have been elusive so far. The recent escalation of clashes between security agencies and local insurgents in the South East, have heightened the calls for Government to urgently rethink its strategies for combatting the security challenges in Eastern Nigeria and other hotspots like Benue State, where there are killings almost on a daily basis. The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, was not left out, as there was an attempt to assassinate him earlier this year in March, while seven internally displaced persons taking refuge in a Camp in Abagena, Makurdi were murdered last week. Policemen and other security personnel, have also not been spared, as several of them have lost their lives in the violence. At least five Policemen were killed about two weeks ago in Okigwe, Imo State, while others suffered the same fate of death in Rivers State.
