US launches COVID-19 messages of Hope intervention in Nigeria

US Consul General, Claire Pierangelo, on Wednesday launched the COVID-19 messages of Hope intervention project in Nigeria in a bid to stop the spread of the disease.
Pierangelo launched the project in Lagos, in collaboration with Caritas Nigeria and other religious and community leaders.
She said the project presents a typical opportunity to accelerate pandemic risk control through the influence of faith-based and community leaders.
“The influence of religious and community leaders throughout the country cannot be overstated and we need this to communicate and bring an end to the pandemic in Nigeria, ” she said. ....

Aziz: NIMC is Working Towards Meeting Enrolment Target


The Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission, Aliyu Aziz, in this interview speaks on a number of issues around the enrolment target for the National Identification Number and SIM linkage. Emma Okonji brings the excerpts:
The federal government has a target date for National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to enrol all Nigerians and legal residents. Are you on course to meet this target, and what is the total enrolled as of now?
Thank you for that question, and for the opportunity to address Nigerians through your esteemed media organisation. The federal government’s statement was first made in 2018 upon the federal executive council’s approval of the strategic roadmap for accelerating digital identity project using ecosystem approach. The target of year 2022 was on the premise of partnership with public and private sector agencies to support the commission in data capturing services and making the National Identification Number (NIN) enrol ....

Last year, the Federal Government inadvertently activated the panic button when it gave a timeline to subscriber identity module (SIM) and National Identity Number (NIN) linkage. Several millions of SIM cards are yet to be linked but the Director-General, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Aliyu Aziz, says NIN enrolment is an ongoing process. Though the Federal Government has extended the SIM-NIN sync deadline from February 9 to April 6, Aziz says the Standing Committee and Ministerial Task Force have the responsibility to advise the Federal Government on whether or not to further extend the deadline.
