State 'on the cusp' of vaccine eligibility for all adults

Health districts across the Fredericksburg region are ready for the news Gov. Ralph Northam announced Thursday: Anyone in Virginia age 16 and older who wants a COVID-19 vaccine will be eligible for it starting April 18.
That’s almost two weeks ahead of President Joe Biden’s goal of having the general public eligible for shots by May 1.
“We’re on the cusp of open eligibility. It is really just days away and that’s a great thing for our community,” Dr. Mike McDermott, CEO of Mary Washington Hospital, said during an “Ask the Mayor” session recorded this week with Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw. “It’s the best health decision that you can make for yourself, and so I encourage everybody to get vaccinated as quickly as possible.” ....

Getting vaccinated can help younger Hoosiers resume normalcy, protect others

INDIANAPOLIS — Why should young people, who are at low risk themselves of getting seriously ill or dying of COVID-19, get vaccinated?
Ask health officials and they’ll say it’s not just about protecting themselves from illness, but it’s a step toward reclaiming their pre-pandemic lifestyle and a way to protect their loved ones, both the very young and the very old.
Ask the Millennials and Gen Z’ers who are already getting the vaccine themselves and, well, they’ll tell you pretty much the same thing.
“We know so many people who are very thankful and excited to protect themselves and others. Few negative or undecided persons. The sooner we are all protected, the sooner get back to normal,” said Grace Caswell, an under-40 who works with the local St. Martin’s Healthcare organization. She was fully vaccinated earlier this year but her husband recently signed up for his first shot, too. ....

Virginia Tech graduate students miffed they were left off vaccine email

Graduate students at Virginia Tech are expressing frustration after roughly 3,500 students were left off an email to university employees about securing a COVID-19 vaccination this week.
Employees at Tech and Radford University began getting vaccinated Tuesday at special clinics for faculty and staff hosted by the Virginia Department of Health.
Tech secured 1,500 vaccine doses, President Tim Sands told employees last week, and urged them to check their emails about how to register.
But the vast majority of grad students — most of whom work 20 hours a week for Tech on assistantships — never got the email, according to the Graduate Student Assembly and graduate student representative to the university’s Board of Visitors. ....
