TRENTON, New Jersey (WABC) Governor Phil Murphy said Wednesday that New Jersey expects to have all schools open for full-time in person learning by the start of the 2021-2022 academic year. The state has now distributed more than 3 million COVID-19 vaccines, with 1.1 million people fully vaccinated, and Murphy said the focus on vaccinating teachers will only increase safety at schools that are already showing low transmission rates. He said there have only been 800 cases linked to in-person learning since August 1, out of 565,000 confirmed cases statewide. He also said the biggest shift back to in-person learning has been in the last week, and more than half of all schools are at least on a hybrid system. ....
Restaurants and other businesses in New Jersey will increase to 50% indoor capacity on March 19. Meanwhile, of 812 public-school districts, charter schools, renaissance schools, and schools for students with disabilities, 110 have opened for all-person instruction, 541 for hybrid instruction, 36 using a mix of options across buildings and 125 all-remote. Getting all of our students back in their familiar school surroundings is among our top priorities, the governor said. The announcement from the district stated there has been a six month, long-term school planning process to shift students into higher-quality and newer facilities. Ultimately, district officials said this will put them on a path to long-term financial success. Currently, the district announced it has a projected $40 million deficit in fiscal year 2022, and every year going forward. Over a decade the school district is looking at a budget deficit that exceeds $400 million. The district said three of the four buildings are more than 100 years old, and all four buildings are in need of structural repair. On average, the schools are 30% empty, enrollment in the district has declined by nearly 50% since 2013. ....
