May 8 Elsie Herring, a Duplin County woman who became one of the most outspoken critics of the state s hog industry, died Wednesday, according to an announcement from the N.C. Environmental Justice Network.
Friends and colleagues of Herring s remembered her as someone who helped put a face to the struggles that have long been reported by rural residents living near some hog farms.
These stories are personal but when it comes to injustice, she was willing to tell how it affected her and her family. . Couldn t anybody tell her story the way she could tell her story, Devon Hall, the co-founder of the Warsaw-based Rural Empowerment Association for Community Help, told The News & Observer. Activists call for the elimination of lagoon and spray field system


More than two dozen environmentalist and social justice groups signed a petition detailing concerns about the potentially harmful impacts of biogas projects in rural North Carolina communities of color and are calling for their elimination.
The document, signed by 26 groups including the NC Sierra Club, the NC Conservation Network and the Poor People s Campaign, also criticizes Smithfield Foods for not upholding a promise the company made to create safer technologies to manage hog waste on swine farms in the state. 
In the 2000 agreement, Smithfield Foods vowed to spend $15 million to get rid of the lagoon and spray-field system which showers hog waste onto crops, contributes to the pollution of the air and groundwater, and has adverse health effects on communities living around the industrialized hog farms, according to environmentalists. ....

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper just announced that Dionne Delli-Gatti will be the new Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.  Delli-Gatti will replace Michael Regan, who is President Biden’s choice to lead the U.S. EPA.  Regan, a native North Carolinian, was formerly Southeast regional director for the Environmental Defense Fund, where he focused on climate change and improving air quality. 
Delli-Gatti also worked for the Environmental Defense Fund.  For the past three years, she was the Director of Regulatory and Legislative Affairs for Southeast Climate and Energy.   She states her area of expertise is energy policy, government affairs and environmental justice and equity.  Previously, she worked with the Atlanta EPA Regional office for six years as a Public Affairs Specialist with the Congressional and Intergovernmental Liaison group.  Prior to her work with EPA, she ....
