DAYTONA BEACH — When the completely reinvented Riverfront Park opens early next year, the public green space is going to look dramatically different. One impossible-to-miss change will be fencing wrapping around the park, a $1.5 million addition to the overhaul project made to enable the park to close every night and not reopen until the sun comes up each morning. That was just one change mentioned during Wednesday night's City Commission meeting during a discussion of amendments to the lease agreement between the city and the private foundation that will run Riverfront Park. During the meeting commissioners also decided to have a trail that runs through the city-owned park along the Halifax River controlled by the Brown Riverfront Esplanade Foundation.
DAYTONA BEACH — If you've been in COVID-19 hibernation and haven't come out much over the past year, you're going to find part of the downtown riverfront almost unrecognizable. The northern end of the park that runs along the western bank of the Halifax River has been undergoing a $25 million transformation over the past 10 months, and the recreational space is starting to offer glimpses of the esplanade it will become. Dozens of replanted mature trees are settling into their new home, sprawling retention ponds are being carved out, and berms are turning the once-flat expanse into artful waves of rolling land.
DAYTONA BEACH — For years, the city has been battling to eradicate state deed restrictions that block it from creating private development along the banks of the Halifax River. Last week, the city finally notched a small victory among the dozens of acres it's been trying to liberate from public-use-only mandates. On Tuesday the Florida Cabinet unanimously approved lifting state deed restrictions on a small piece of riverfront city land next to the Halifax Harbor Marina. The .41-acre property that had been the home of the Armed Forces Reserve Center for nearly 50 years could now be closer to becoming part of a new development with condominiums, a hotel, restaurant or some other new use.
