Community Will Weigh in On Essex Crossing Park March 19 | The Lo-Down : News from the Lower East Side

In our update of the Essex Crossing development project last week, we mentioned that residents would soon be asked for their input regarding a park being planned on Broome Street. We now have details for the first meeting. It’ll be Wednesday, March 19, 6:30 p.m., at the JASA/Green building, 200 East 5th St.
The open space is located on site #5 of the nearly 2 million square foot residential and retail project. It will cover 15,000 square feet. During the land use approval process, the city agreed to give the community a role in designing the park, part of a parcel which will also include a grocery store, apartments, a dual generation school and, possibly, a new public school. The architectural firm, Beyer Blinder Belle, is responsible for the site. ....

No stranger to sharing their feelings, New Yorkers are reportedly livid after a Manhattan public school is asking white parents to rank their level of racist behavior with help from their own children.
According to The New York Post, students at East Side Community High School were sent home with a handy “whiteness” chart to help white people gauge their level of racism, from the preferred “White Abolitionist” to the very worst Klan-like label of an acknowledged “White Supremacist.”
The so-called “8 White Identities” is a color chart created by an African American studies professor, Barnor Hesse. ....

Mark Federman, principal of East Side Community High School in New York City, is a man on a rather dubious mission. In a burst of âwokeness,â Federman sent white parents of students in grades 6-12 a handout asking them to âreflectâ on their âwhiteness.â It was accompanied by a color-coordinated graph of â8 White Identities,â ranging from a red zone on the left titled âWhite Supremacistâ to a green zone on the far right labeled âWhite Abolitionist.â
This screed was authored by Barnor Hesse, a Northwestern University professor of African American studies, political science, and sociology. Hesse also teaches a course called âUnsettling Whiteness,â and the professor makes it clear the content of oneâs character takes a distant back seat to the color of oneâs skin â if it matters at all. âThere is a regime of whiteness, and there are action-oriented white identities,â he insists in a stat ....
