Bangladesh, July 12 Bangladesh has made spectacular economic progress over the last five decades despite limited resources, International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICCB) President Mahbubur Rahman said Sunday.
The GDP growth rate has reached a record high. Per capita income has also risen steadily, he said.
Rahman made the remarks while presenting the Executive Board Report of ICC Bangladesh for 2020 in its annual council held virtually in the city.
He said the country has achieved near self-sufficiency in food production for its population of 170 million.
The country now even shoulders the burden of the world s largest refugee population of over 1 million Rohingyas who have fled persecution in neighbouring Myanmar, Rahman said. ....

International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention C190 and its relevance in Bangladesh

The ILO Convention Eliminating Violence and Harassment in the World of Work (C190) and its accompanying Recommendation (R206) went through a long process and it culminated in the adoption of the convention in the ILO Centenary Conference in 2019. The Bangladesh government voted in favour of the adoption of the Convention C190 and Recommendation R206 and we are optimistic about the ratification of C190 by the government of Bangladesh. Workers and Employers organisation need to engage to discuss the convention s ratification and figure out how it can be integrated into the national system through legislation to improve practices in addressing workplace violence and harassment.. Without addressing issues around violence and harassment, including GBV in the world of work, it is impossible to achieve the Decent Work Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ....

Although Bangladesh has achieved significant growth in exports to the key markets in the UK and US, the export volume to Asian countries is still very low.
Despite having huge regional trade potential, exports to the Asian nation is dull due to regional trade barriers, the absence of preferential trade agreements and bilateral arrangements.
Bangladesh’s export still highly reliant on EU and US markets with around 80 per cent export earnings generated by those markets, exporters and trade experts said Bangladesh can boost exports to Asian potential countries by the removing trade barriers. ....

The second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the major export markets has put Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) sector into a difficult time once again.
Buyers from top export destinations are holding and deferring new orders from Bangladesh due to the re-imposition of strict lockdowns and slowdown in economic activities.
 Apparel makers are apprehending another season of uncertainty in coming days - which has already been reflected in the last two months’ export earnings.
 Following the situation, apparel makers are in fear that the contraction mood of buyers would cause them facing another trying time.
