In the first six months of 2021, the ADB, which is one of the biggest lenders of Bangladesh, has set a target of awarding contracts worth $826 million and disburse $1,027 million, showed an internal document. Pandemic has affected most of the projects implementation, said the Manila-based multilateral lender, adding that the delays in awarding contracts and disbursing funds have seriously impacted the projects performance.

Some 3.10 lakh vehicles used the bridge in April last year amid suspension of public transport services, shows the report. The number of cars and motorcycles using Bangabandhu Bridge saw a sharp rise during the lockdown as these light vehicles apparently replaced buses as modes of transport, sources said.

The planning ministry on Tuesday approved the proposal of Bangladesh Bridge Authority, seeking extension of the deadline because the pandemic slowed down progress. June 23 is the founding anniversary of the Awami League. The ministry, however, assured that the project cost will not exceed the current Tk 30,193 crore. The deadline was June this year. Planning Minister MA Mannan told The Daily Star that he signed the proposal on Tuesday.
