Television is not only society’s primary form of mass communication, it is the source from which a large segment receives not just news but what they consider reality.San Francisco Chronicle file photo
When we take a well-earned break from the onslaught of news that bombards us daily, we might wonder, as we should, how fantasies of reality have gained such strength and support in these past years and seem to coagulate today with greater concentration.
I returned to a book I had read in 2012, published in 2009 by a foreign correspondent of 20 years and a New York Times writer for 15 years, Chris Hedges: “Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle.” His cultural diagnoses have become more prescient and more ubiquitous with time.

Virtual, In-person Events to Mark 4th Annual Juneteenth Event

Housing and Development Newsletter
Community members Simone Ruskamp, Chiany Dri and Jordan Killebrew brought a reiteration of Juneteenth back to Santa Barbara as several Black/African American Elders have celebrated in the region in the past.
In 2018, Ruskamp, Dri and Killebrew gathered to celebrate Junteenth at El Centro on Santa Barbara's lower Westside. This first event featured home-cooked soul food, Black-centered programming; and a safe space for the community to come together to celebrate Black culture.
The following year, Juneteenth SB partnered with the Santa Barbara Public Library, where the event grew to 400 people.
In 2020, due to COVID-19, the celebration was a virtual event that had some 13,000 viewers and featured an array of videos of Black community members sharing their stories, showcasing their work, and their collective histories.
