Seize the momentum of COP26 to make architects’ voices heard COP26’s potential as a global event offers an opportunity to accelerate a change for more sustainable building, says Hattie Hartman COP26 did not take place in 2020, and it may not take place in 2021. Yet, as the scheduled November date of the international climate conference in Glasgow approaches, the race to net zero is on. And the term ‘accelerator’, borrowed from start-up lingo, is percolating into the climate sphere. An accelerator implies intense, rapid, and immersive networking and learning which fast-tracks innovation. Advertisement Acceleration is desperately needed, since we are not currently on course to meet the commitments of the 2015 Paris Agreement, largely because of the discrepancy between what needs to be done, what countries have pledged and actions to date. The UK is no exception. While Boris Johnson announced in December that the UK would aim to reduce its greenhouse gas ....
By Jordan Marshall2021-04-20T12:18:00+01:00 Industry body wants sector to speed up process The rate at which major infrastructure projects are decarbonising is not fast enough to hit the government’s goal of being net zero by 2050, the Construction Leadership Council has warned. The Infrastructure Carbon Review (ICR) was published in November 2013 with the call to action to “reduce carbon, reduce cost”. Source: Shutterstock Industry is currently not changing fast enough to hit carbon targets, the CLC has warned Seven years on, the Green Construction Board – the net zero and sustainability technical lead for the CLC – has assessed industry’s progress to date on decarbonising infrastructure. ....
The construction industry must come to terms with the impact of the built environment on the climate. The last year has shown the incredible things that we are capable of when we work together, responding to covid-19 and keeping our industry working safely and effectively. We must now bring the same spirit and energy to addressing the climate emergency. If our industry is to thrive, we must proactively address the challenges we face before it is too late. From the fantastic work of CLC members like the Green Construction Board and the Infrastructure Client Group working with the ICE in developing technical solutions and pathways, to the incredible innovation being delivered on sites by contractors across the UK every day, many in our industry are already grappling with this challenge. ....
We can’t build back better without the builders 26 Feb 2021 I feel a mix of amusement and surprise hearing TV and radio debates about decarbonisation of heat, major infrastructure projects, electric vehicles, battery storage, public sector funding. Just a few years ago, who would have thought that on prime-time radio, we’d have 15 minutes of discussion about the detail of roof insulation? This staggering change in programming reflects a much bigger change in public and business sentiment, and the beginning of major interventions by the government. The UK Government’s commitment to a 2050 net-zero target marks a much-needed departure from years of ‘if’ and ‘but’ politics surrounding the built environment in the UK. ....
