MACOMB, IL – As two in a series of new park benches were unveiled in Macomb Thursday as part of Earth Day, the project is interwoven with partnerships with several Western Illinois University organizations.
Build a Better Block Macomb has spent over a year collecting thousands of pounds of plastic soda bottle caps, donated by local residents. Those caps were then transported to Green Tree Plastics, an Indiana company that recycles them into park benches. A variety of local residents and organizations have sponsored the processing costs for each bench.
There were already two benches in place in Macomb prior to Build a Better Block s most recent round of sponsorships. MACOMB Macomb’s public spaces will be receiving six new benches and a youth-sized picnic table thanks to a community wide initiative spearheaded by Build a Better Block Macomb.

The response to the call for recycled caps was tremendous with many local organizations, businesses, and individuals collecting caps. Due to this initiative, over 2,000 pounds of plastic have been diverted from the landfill. Two benches were donated to the community in 2020 and are located at the Macomb Public Library and the WIU Horn Field Campus. ....

The Animal Health Technology/Pre-Vet Club plans to memorialize Murray State student Sarah Townsend by building a recycled bench.
The bench will be made out of recycled bottle caps. Once these are collected, the caps will be sent to Green Tree Plastics, where they will be sorted, weighed and cleaned before being melted down.
Two students, junior Emmalee Storm and senior Kylee Harden, came up with the idea after some members of the Pre-Vet Club suggested different ways to memorialize Townsend.
Storm said she volunteered to help Harden with the bench because they’ve both had experience with building recycled benches in high school. ....
