Sullivan: Time is short to salvage Alaska's large-ship cruise season

Alaska’s visitor industry is holding out hope that large cruise ships may be allowed to sail sometime this season possibly by July. But Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan says it would require policy changes on both sides of the US- Canada border for that to happen, and time is tight. ....

We ve been having requests coming in for cruising straight along, people wanting to cruise not only this summer, and we couldn t accommodate them, but also ahead. It’s been a long year for people who enjoy taking cruises but have been unable to cruise due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, finally, some good news has appeared on the horizon: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it is committed to allowing cruise ships to resume passenger operations in mid-summer.
“We acknowledge that cruising will never be a zero-risk activity and that the goal of the Framework for Conditional Sailing Order’s phased approach is to resume passenger operations in a way that mitigates the risk of COVID-19 transmission onboard cruise ships and across port communities,” Aimee Treffiletti, head of the Maritime Unit for CDC’s COVID-19 response within its Global Mitigation Task Force, wrote in a letter to the cruise industry, NBC Miami reports. “We remain committed to the resumption of passenger operations in the United States following the requirements in the Cond ....

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday told cruise lines that they could resume sailing with passengers as early as mid-summer. In a letter to cruise lines that was first obtained by USA Today and later reported by Reuters, Aimee Treffiletti, head of the maritime unit for the CDC's COVID-19 response, said that while "cruising will never be a zero-risk activity," the goal of a phased reopening "is to resume passenger. ....
