HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Former Montana Gov. Stan Stephens, a radio journalist who became a leading Republican lawmaker, has died. He was 91.
Stephens died Saturday in Kalispell after several months of ill health, according to former state Sen. John Brendan.
Stephens, a Republican, served as the state s 20th governor between 1989 and 1993.
He was born in Calgary, Canada, and moved to Montana when he was 19 to harvest wheat. During his decades-long career in broadcasting he served with the U.S. Armed Forces Broadcast Network during the Korean War.
Prior to his tenure as governor, Stephens was a member of the Montana Senate representing Havre for 16 years beginning in 1969. During that time, he served as majority leader and senate president. ....

Stan Stephens passed away on April 3, 2021, in Kalispell, Montana, following an extended period of declining health. He was 91 years old.
He was born September 16, 1929, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to Margaret and Joseph Stephens, immigrants from Scotland and England. He was the second-oldest of five remarkable boys. He grew up in a loving and musically gifted family, learning from his father to master the trumpet at an early age. By age 7, Stan was playing trumpet solos in the Calgary Symphony. Later, he played in small ensembles, musical productions, dance bands and jazz bands. Music was a life-long passion to him, and he savored listening to a well-done performance as much as he enjoyed performing. ....

He was almost too nice of a guy to be governor. That s how former State Senator John Brenden (R-Scobey) described the late Montana Gov. Stan Stephens. This, after news began to circulate over the weekend that Stephens had passed away.
Stan Stephens was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He moved to Montana when he was 19. He had a 38-year career in broadcasting that included service with the U.S. Armed Forces Broadcast Network during the Korean War. In 1975, he earned the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for journalistic excellence in editorials for uncovering a scandal in the Montana Workers’ Compensation Program. He began his political career in 1969 with his election to the Montana State Senate. In his 16-year tenure, he served as floor whip, majority leader, and senate president. In 1986 he was recognized by the National Republican Legislators’ Association as one of the country’ ....
